Inspection and surveillance of fisheries resources

Illegal capture, the use of prohibited fishing gear and violation of bans are some of the illegal activities that affect fisheries resources (FAO, 2009). On this regard, the main purpose of the inspection and surveillance programs conducted by the Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection (Profepa) in relation to fisheries resources is to ensure the proper compliance of existent regulations and to support the adequate resolution of conflicts related to the use of these resources (SAGARPA, 2001b; Profepa, 2008). The indicator Inspection and surveillance activities of fisheries resources shows the government's efforts aimed at enforcing current regulations on fishery resources.
